Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 447

As the sky blushed with the colors of a sunset, Everett guided Selena through the VIP ward area. They bumped into Callum, who was in a white lab coat, busy giving instructions to a nurse. Everett's face tightened with a frown.

Selena, however, was relieved. She'd been worried about Callum; after all, being locked up isn't exactly a walk in the park. Yet here he was, free and seemingly fine. She looked him over carefully.

He seemed a bit pale, but otherwise, he looked okay. This put her mind at ease.

Callum noticed them as he glanced up, his gaze skipping over Everett to rest on Selena.

Their eyes locked.

In an instant, Everett stepped in front of Selena with a stern expression, blocking Callum's view. A smirk, cold and calculating, played on his lips. "Callum, guess I underestimated you." Seeing Callum at the hospital, Everett realized this was his move in their ongoing game.

Josh's health was failing fast, and there was an unspoken rule not to bother him. Even Selena hadn't exchanged words with Josh throughout.

They could have gone about their rivalry openly or in shadows, each relying on their own skills.

But Callum, always the gentleman, had broken the rules first.

Callum caught the subtext in Everett's words, but merely replied, "Josh has been waiting. You should see him."

Everett wrapped an arm possessively around Selena's waist and led her towards the ward.novelbin

As they stepped in, a vase flew at them.

Everett, used to such antics, quickly pushed Selena to safety and dodged, letting the vase graze past his forehead.

Josh, frail but fiery in his hospital bed, pointed at Everett, his voice a sharp reprimand. "I told you to care for your wife and child, and this is how you do it? Driving her away and locking her up on some deserted island? What kind of man does that techis wife? Is this what I taught you?"

"You think you're untouchable now, huh? Kneel!"

Without a word of defense, Everett knelt.

Josh ordered the butler to give him a lashing, but the butler, trembling, refused. So Josh lifted his own cane, striking Everett a few times, demanding if he'd realized his mistakes. en

Everett endured it all without flinching.

As Josh caught his breath, Everett calmly asked, "Grandfather, if Callum's trying to take away my wife and kid, should I just stand by? Watch it happen, be made a fool of, and call that being a man? Is that the teaching I'm supposed to follow?"

Josh was momentarily stumped.

After a pause, he managed to retort, "Don't twist my words. Selena and Callum are good kids; they wouldn't do such a thing. If it weren't for you..." Everett cut him off, "Grandfather."

He glanced lazily at Selena, who sat quietly, his smile chilly. "Before you side with them, maybe ask her if she and Callum planned to run off together this time?" Josh's eyes turned to Selena.

Meeting Everett's intense gaze, Selena felt a sudden weight in her chest.

She grasped his meaning; if Josh bought into Everett's story, she'd lose her last bit of support and be completely under his control.
