Gilbert's face darkened as he cut her off, his lips pressed into a thin line, the tension in his features betraying his displeasure.
"Not happy?" Sherilyn's eyebrows quirked up slightly. "Am I not speaking the truth? The one who should be upset about the wounds your sweetheart has suffered is her..."
"Enough! Stop talking about sweethearts!"
Gilbert, struggling to contain his irritation, glared at her coldly. "How many times have I told you about Caroline? There's nothing between us. Last night was all about my brother..."
"Really?"
Sherilyn chuckled, a sharp glint passing through her eyes. "Could it be, Mr. Gilbert, that you're in love without even realizing it?"
"Sherilyn..."
Knock, knock. The door to the hospital room opened.
A nurse entered, pushing a treatment cart. "Mr. Johnson, it's time for your afternoon IV."
Gilbert glared at Sherilyn, his face stormy, and remained silent.
"Thank you."
Sherilyn stepped back to give the nurse room to work. "Much appreciated."
"Not at all, Ms. Gomez, you're too kind."
The nurse smiled, bent down, and started administering the medication to Gilbert.
"All set-If you need anything, just call us at the nurse's station or press the call button."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
With the nurse gone, the room fell silent.
After that interruption, the atmosphere became subtly awkward.
Sherilyn had no intention of revisiting their earlier conversation. She pulled up a chair and sat down, glancing at the IV bag. "This is going to take at least an hour and a half."
As she finished speaking, she yawned widely. "Ahh..."
Tears of fatigue brimmed in her eyes. Sherilyn raised a hand to wipe them away.
Gilbert watched her, the irritation from before subsiding. "Tired?"
"Mhm."
Sherilyn nodded, yawning again. "Ahh... How could I not be? After all the commotion last night, I barely slept three hours. Then I had to rush to the dance troupe first thing in the morning."
Now that she was sitting down, sleepiness overwhelmed her.
Gilbert glanced at his hospital bed, which was spacious enough for another person. "Sherilyn, come here..."
He had barely spoken when the door opened again.
This time, it was Charles.
"What is it?" Gilbert's expression was anything but pleased. What was he doing here at a time like this?
Oh.
Charles paused, feeling a chill on the back of his neck.
Why did he feel like Mr. Gilbert's gaze was cutting right through him?
"Mr. Gilbert." Charles cleared his throat, quickly speaking up. "I was wondering if Sherilyn wanted to go back and fetch some things for you?"
Charles was indeed thoughtful.
Gilbert was expected to stay in the hospital for a few days. While it was easy to buy whatever he needed, personal items like clothes, a razor, and such were always moreo comfortable from home.
This was something even Sherilyn hadn't considered.
Normally, Charles would have taken care of it himself, but now that

"That's very considerate of you." Sherilyn nodded in agreement. "I'll go back then. I know his things better."
"Good."
Sherilyn stood up and instructed Charles, "I'll leave you in charge here. I'll head back and pack."
Charles replied, "David is waiting downstairs. He'll drive you back."
"Alright, got it."
"Sherilyn." As she turned to leave, Gilbert called out to her.
Sherilyn turned back to look at him, and he was giving her puppy dog eyes. "You'll come back, right?"
