CHAPTER 6
Chapter 6 We’ve all been adults
I felt like I had descended into a frigid abyss, my veins turning to ice.
Briefly, I questioned the accuracy of what I had just heard.
I had occasionally wondered if there was a discord between Christopher and Evelyn, yet those reflections were always dismissed. Although not bound by blood, they were regarded as members of the Valence clan, akin to siblings.
Furthermore, both of them were wed.
Christopher, a man of dignity, would never do something so ridiculous.
However, nearby, his gaze blazed crimson, pressing Evelyn against the wall as his tone dripped with icy, scornful mockery.
“Divorce for me? You chose to marry another man back then. On what grounds do you approach me?”
Evelyn stood mute against his relentless interrogations, tears streaming freely.
She clung to Christopher’s garments, hands trembling. “I was wrong, Chris. Can you pardon me for just this instance? I had no recourse at the time.”
“I’m wedded.”
“Can’t you divorce?”
Evelyn’s plea echoed desperation, as if her world would shatter if rebuffed.
Her brazen inquiry caught me off guard; she seemed devoid of remorse for disrupting other’s union.
Christopher’s laughter, tinged with bitterness, countered, “Marriage may be a triviality to you, but not to me!” With that, he made to depart.
Yet Evelyn grasped his attire, refusing release.
I knew Christopher’s strength-if he wanted, he could easily break free.
I stared at the scene blankly for a long time. I was clearly anticipating something.
I hoped for Christopher to break free,
I hoped for him to set boundaries with Evelyn.
That way, there would still be a glimmer of hope for our marriage.
And Christopher did just that.
He said, “We’re all adults now, don’t speak such foolishness.”

At this point, it should all come to an end.
1 let out a sudden sigh of relief.
I no longer had the interest to delve further into this.
Do you cherish her, Chris? Gaze into my eyes and convey, do you love her?” Evelyn’s insistence resembled that of a child demanding candy. Undeterred, she clutched his arm anew.
My heart ski p pe d a beat; though I hadn’t turned around, I could hear Christopher’s response.
“That’s none of your business. ”
“So, do you no longer love me? This has got to do with me, right?”
I admired Evelyn’s courage for persistent questioning. Little did I know, it wasn’t courage. She had someone to rely on, someone who favored her, which was something I had never possessed.
Christopher’s stature tensed; his face clouded with gloom.
He offered no reply, but Evelyn persisted.
They resembled tragic characters in a play.
His every moment of silence felt stifling, leaving me breathless.
Mrs. Valence, I found the coat you wore this spring. Please put it on to keep warm.”
The s o ce seemed louder than usual.
Christopher immediately looked over.
I felt a sense of embarrassment, sensing I had intruded on someone’s secret. However, I quickly suppressed that
feeling.
Christopher was the one who needed to provide an explanation.

He pushed Evelyn away and walked over. His voice, unlike the coldness from before, was gentle yet distant.

“Did you hear that?”
“Yes,”
I didn’t hide anything.
Christopher remained silent, taking the coat from the maid and helping me put it on.
He put his arm around me and said, “It’s windy. Let’s go inside.”
It was as if the conversation, I had just overheard was nothing out of the ordinary.

“Chris.” Evelyn’s stubborn voice called out again and again.
Christopher seemed not to hear.
He was distracted, frequently checking his phone,
At 9 o’clock in the evening, it was Bentley’s usual rest time.
“You’re a married man now. Show some restraint!”
Bentley sent us to the yard, warning Christopher coldly, “Treat Hope well. Just because she has no family doesn’t mean you can bully her!”
Tears filled my eyes.
Christopher nodded with a faint smile. “Alright, I won’t bully her, nor will I let anyone else bully her. You don’t need to
worry.”
“Hope, come to me if you need anything. I’ll take care of it for you.”
Bentley patted my head kindly.
I smiled and said, “Okay, I’ll come to see you when I have time. You should go in and rest early.”
On the way back, I sat in the passenger seat, feeling a bit drowsy.
I don’t know if it’s because I’ve started to show signs of pregnancy, or for some other reason, I’ve been extremely sleepy lately.
But at this moment, I couldn’t sleep at all.
My body was exhausted, but my mind was clear.
I had originally planned to wait until we got home and ask Christopher for an explanation.
But the wait was too agonizing.
I couldn’t wait any longer and asked, “What is your relationship with Evelyn?”
Was she just an ordinary first love to him, or someone he had always loved?
Hearing this, Christopher slowed down the car and calmly replied, “We almost ended up together.”
I bit my lip.
My throat felt like it had been blocked by a sponge, and it took me a while to speak.
“Was it during your college years?
Dusty
fragments of memories surged forth.

Chapter 6 We’ve all been adults
Christopher was my senior in college, a highly influential figure in the school.
He had a face that seemed favored by the g s.
As the heir of the Valence Group, he was exceptionally capable and exuded a noble and aloof aura.
There wasn’t a girl who didn’t like him.
Love letters from girls were a common sight in his school bag.
However, before I could confess my feelings, I heard that he had a feeling for someone.
It turned out to be Evelyn.
“How did you know?”
Christopher looked at me in surprise.
I turned to him, my voice filled with sadness. “Christopher, have you forgotten that I also graduated from Jacquar
University?”
“Oh, yes.”
Christopher regained his usual composure.
“Im sorry, it’s been too long.”
Was it because too much time had passed, or because he didn’t care?
Just as I was about to say something, his phone vibrated.
He didn’t even look at it and hung up straight away.
But his phone immediately started ringing again, over and over.
It was as if she would call until the end of the world if he didn’t answer.

Christopher hung up once more, his face expressionless.

He seemed troubled and explained to me, “She has been spoiled by Brenda and my dad.”
I forced a smile and took his phone.
After blocking and deleting Evelyn’s contact information, I handed it back to him.
“Now it’s quiet.”
