Chapter 30 Take a Look
Josephine pounded on the door for a while, but she eventually collapsed and sat on the ground. The cluttered storage room was pitch–black and cramped.
It was too quiet. Even the air was still.
The overwhelming darkness enveloped Josephine, like countless spider webs wrapping around her, making it difficult for her to breathe.
She crouched on the icy floor, hugging her knees tightly.
The only sounds in the entire room were the sounds of her breathing and the beating of her heart.
Lewis asked her to reflect on herself, but she didn’t know what to reflect on. Was it because she waited alone in the restaurant for five hours, or was it because she sent Mrs. Jinkins home?
She didn’t know what she had done
wrong.
Josephine felt around in her pocket and took out her phone. It was dead and wouldn’t turn on.
Curled up against the door, she shut her eyes and covered her ears. Josephine pretended that she was still in her bedroom, just that it was dark outside.
When she was six years old, Daphne had also locked her up in the storage room for a whole day. Rats and bugs crawled over her skin as she was locked inside. For a six- year–old child like Josephine, it was terribly traumatizing.
The most tragic thing was that she couldn’t even make a sound to express her fear. She desperately pounded and scratched at the door until her fingers bled, but no one came to rescue her.
In the end, it was Lewis who opened the door and rescued her.
That was the first time Lewis hugged her. She could still remember the warmth of that embrace vividly as it happened yesterday.
The faint, minty fragrance was uniquely Lewis’s when he was just a teenager.
Now, he was the one who plunged her into the abyss and brought her back to that fateful day.
Her beautiful memory of him was tainted by his actions.
Josephine tried to recall bits and pieces of her fading memories, but her heart.
seemed to be squeezed tightly by an invisible force, making her gasp for air.
She clawed at her collar, panting heavily. Her heart raced in her chest as her breathing became ragged.
Josephine knelt on the ground and pounded on the door with the last ounce of hope that someone would rescue her. Finally, her movements slowed down in the end as her energy ran out.
Meanwhile, Lewis had already left in his car, unable to hear Josephine’s cries for help from the storage room.
On the way, Avery suddenly gave him a call. Lewis glanced at the caller id and threw his phone on the passenger seat.
Avery furrowed her brows when her calls were not answered. Deep down, she knew that Lewis wasn’t going to pick up her call. She banged on the door of her room and called out, “Mr. Hudson, Mr.
Hudson!”
The
butler, Mr. Hudson quickly rushed upstairs and stood outside Avery’s door. He replied respectfully, “Miss Avery, how may I assist you?”
“Where’s my brother? Ask him to come here, I need to talk to him!” Avery demanded.
“Master Tyler hasn’t returned yet, it’s no use trying to call him. Even if he’s here, he won’t let you out, Mr. Hudson answered calmly.
Avery was furious upon hearing this and yelled at the door, “You’d better call and tell him to come back this instant, or else I’ll jump off the third floor!”
Mr. Hudson had the shock of his life. Given Miss Avery’s personality, she might actually jump out the window.
He quickly pacified her and rushed to call Tyler.
Tyler was busy meeting with clients when he received a call from Mr. Hudson. He rubbed his forehead in frustration and left the meeting room to call Avery back.
“Avy, can’t you just stay at home and be good for a few days? I can’t do anything. about this since Father has grounded you, Tyler said with a hint of impatience.
“It’s not about that. Tyler, I’ve been trying to call Josephine, but she’s not answering my calls or messages. Can you call Lewis and ask if anything happened to her?” Avery asked anxiously. NôvelDrama.Org content rights.
Tyler became annoyed when he heard Josephine’s name. “You’re in no position to worry about others now. Are you planning to get yourself locked up forever?”
“I don’t care whether I get out of my room or not! Please help me confirm that
Josephine is safe. Even if Lewis bullied her, she won’t tell anyone about it!”
Tyler was taken aback for a moment. It was true that Josephine was pregnant now. If Lewis did anything bad to her, she might not be able to take the stress.
“Okay, I get it. I’ll call him and ask. Don’t worry too much. Although Lewis doesn’t have any feelings for Josephine, they grew up together, so he won’t let anything happen to her,” Tyler assured Avery.
“Forget it, Lewis is a heartless man. Can you really expect him to have any empathy?” Avery scoffed.
Avery was right about Lewis’s cold nature. If he really loved Sierra that much, hel would have divorced Josephine and married Sierra long ago. He wouldn’t be entangled with other women while still being married to Josephine.
“Alright, I’ll ask,” Tyler interrupted her and hung up. After that, he called Lewis.
This time, Lewis answered the call. At that moment, Tyler didn’t know how to bring up the topic.
“What’s up?” Lewis asked.
Tyler cleared his throat and said awkwardly, “Avy couldn’t reach Josephine, so she wanted to know if everything was okay with her.”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone before Lewis spoke
sarcastically, “Huh, why are your family members so interested in other people’s affairs?”
“Lewis, don’t be defensive. Avy and Josephine are friends, so it’s natural that she is concerned,” Tyler replied.
“Is that so?” Lewis laughed and continued in a frosty tone, “Tyler, Avery is your sister, you should know her best. You’d better keep an eye on her. Otherwise, don’t blame me for not warning you.”
After saying that, Lewis hung up. Tyler sighed helplessly as he stared at the
disconnected call.
Unlike a demure lady, Avery had a hot temper and a fiery personality.
Actually, she wasn’t always like this.
Everything happened two years ago, when their parents had tried to arrange a marriage for her, and Avery had run away from home in anger.
When she returned home, she had cut her hair short and dressed like a man, even declaring that she wasn’t straight.
The news spread like wildfire. All the sons of the aristocratic families in Elysium distanced themselves from Avery.
As Avery’s brother, he did not believe her words. However, over the past two years, Avery’s behavior had gradually become more masculine. She spent her time racing cars, riding dirt bikes, and drinking at bars. Tyler couldn’t help but slowly begin to doubt her sexuality.
In fact, Lewis probably didn’t believe that Avery was a threat, but the recent events had probably made him wary of her as well.
When she got herself involved in Lewis and Josephine’s affairs, their father, who was away on a business trip, was so worried that he rushed back to Elysium overnight and locked Avery in her room.
Tyler snapped out of his thoughts and called Avery.
When Avery picked up the call, she said, “Tyler, go to her house and take a look.”
Stunned, Tyler sputtered, “Are you kidding me?”
“I’m not kidding, I’m serious. Please go and check on her, I beg you, just take a look.”
Tyler refused without hesitation, “No, why should I do that!?”
“Josephine is pregnant. If something happens to her, can you live with yourself?” Avery pleaded.
“That’s not my problem.”
Seeing that Tyler wasn’t going to comply, Avery opened her window.
“Then should I just jump from the third floor?”
She purposely made a loud noise while opening the window so that Tyler could hear it through the call.
