Chapter 9
Raymond POV
I can finally smile genuinely now that I finally have the woman I have always wanted. For the past few years I have been working with Adelie, I have always had my eyes on her and looking forward to the day she'll finally be mine. Well, it was love at first sight, but my fear of getting rejected later didn't allow me to speak up my mind and confess my feelings to her. I wouldn't have gotten the courage to ask her out, but thanks to Rowan, my best friend that encouraged me to go for her.
I throw myself on the bed as soon as I walk inside my room, and staring up at the ceiling, I can't help the smile that forms on my lips. For the first time in a while, I feel so happy and alive.
"I thought you were never going to come home. What kept you so long? Did anything happen?" I almost jump out of my skin when I hear my mom's voice speak, and I quickly sit up on the bed, and there she is, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed on her chest. What the heck! When did she get here?
"How come you're here, mom? I thought you are coming back in three months. You left barely three days now," I pull a puzzled look, but the fifty-three years old yet young-looking woman rolls her eyes as she walks over to the window and opens it.
"Do you want to suffocate to death? Why didn't you open the window?" She scoffs, ignoring the question I asked her.
"I was still going to do that. I asked a question, mom," I ask for the second time.
"I changed my mind," She replies to me casually, and I slowly nod my head, even if I'm not happy to have her around. Don't mistake me that I don't like my mom. I love her so much, but I bet you'll do the same thing if you were in my shoes. What do you expect of someone that does nothing but frustrate life out of me?
"Oh," I slowly nod my head.
"Well..." She pauses and turns to face me.
"Since you have decided not to get a girlfriend, your dad and I have decided to engage you with my best friend's daughter, Emily. You know her, right?" She releases the bombshell to me, and my eyes slowly widen in shock as her words replay in my head. This must be an expensive joke of the century.
"Are you kidding me?" I scoff, and she rolls her eyes.
"Does it look like I'm kidding? Well, I'm not. I already spoke with Emily, and she confirmed to be single. She'll be in the country in three days, so we need to go to her parent's house tomorrow to see them for first introduction..." "No way, mom. I won't marry Emily," I quickly refuse, but she just scoffs like I just bluffed out rubbish.
"Sorry, my darling son, but you don't have a choice at this point. Your dad and I have given you more than enough time to choose a spouse, and since you are not ready to, forcing you into this won't be something bad and inconsiderate," She shrugs, and I sigh frustratingly.
"Mom..."
"Don't push your luck, Raymond. This has been decided," She cuts me off.
"I have a girlfriend now, mom. Just give us some time, and I promise to bring her here so you'll see her," I reply to her, trying to sound as much convincing as I can.
"You must be out of your mind to think you can say that to me and I will believe you. You can't fool me again, sweetheart," She rolls her eyes, and I run my fingers through my hair. How can I possibly convince her that I'm saying the truth? I don't blame her, anyway. It was all my fault. I had lied to her and dad in the past that I was going to introduce my girlfriend to them but failed, so I don't expect them to believe me again.
"I'm not lying, mom. I got a girlfriend already. Her name is Adelie, and I promise you will like her. Just give me some time, and I promise to bring her for you and dad to meet her. I can't marry Emily," I plead with her, and she sighs briefly. "Seventy two hours, Raymond. If after seventy-two hours you fail to bring this Adelie who may not even be existing like your so-called girlfriend months ago, then you must marry Emily, and nothing will stop me. Do you get?" She says, and I quickly nod my head. I can't afford to be with another woman aside from Adelie. I have fallen so deeply in love with her to be with another woman now.
"I cross my heart, mom," I say to her before she strides out of my room, and slams the door behind her. I finally release the breath I have been holding unknowingly.
Reaching out for my phone, I unlock it and scroll through the contacts and once I get to Adelie's number, I click on the 'dial' icon, waiting patiently for her to answer the call so I can hear her sweet voice. The call rings for a few seconds, and strangely drops dead.
"Why's she not answering her call?" I dial the number for the second time, and this time she answers the call. This is the property of Nô-velDrama.Org.
"Give me the damn phone, Asher! Wait! You can't do that... Give me my phone!" Her yells sounds through the phone instead, and I check my phone screen to be sure that she was really the one I called even though I can hear her voice. "Who is calling you, Adelie? Raymond? Why's he calling you?" A masculine voice sounds from the other end, and I slowly clench my fingers around the phone as I feel anger spur through me. Who the hell is that?
Bringing the phone down from my ear, I disconnect the call and throw my phone on the bed angrily, running my fingers through my hair crazily afterward. Who the hell was that?
