Chapter 279
Chapter 279 Willard’s Threat
Lamont could see the turmoil in her expression and took her hand in his.
“Enough of this. Aren’t you going to join the crew? I’ll be by your side taking care of you till the filming wraps up.”
“It’s fine. There are a lot of things for you to handle in the company. You don’t have to worry too much about me. I’m really fine. I’m just…”
She was cut off by the sudden shrill ring of her phone.
Startled, she fished it out of her pocket.
To her surprise, it was a landline number flashing on the screen.
As she reached to answer it, Lamont snatc hed it from her grasp.
“I’ll take this.”
Lamont’s face was etched with tension as he seemed to have anticipated something.
Amelie watched him with growing concern.
She couldn’t hear what was being said, but Lamont’s expression grew darker by the second. In the end, he hung up the phone.
“What’s wrong?”
Amelie asked anxiously.
“Nothing, don’t worry about it. Just get some rest and put it out of your mind.”
“But…”
Amelie intended to press, but Lamont walked away.
She watched him leave with a sense of unease, her mind churning with questions.
In a suburban villa, there was a coffee shop renowned for its unique blends.
Willard sat in one of its private rooms, sipping coffee with an air of nonchalance.
“Mr. Aylward, the premium Cappuccino you ordered is ready. I’ll leave it on the table.”
“Good.”
Willard responded in a bland tone.
He was waiting for Amelie.
In the eyes of many people, he might be a ruthless man, but only he knew what he truly
desired.
Downstairs, a sleek Ferrari pulled up to the curb.
Amelie stepped out.
In the driver seat, Lamont looked grim.
Amelie made her way to Willard’s location, guided by the waiter’s directions.
“What made you suddenly want to see me, Mr. Aylward?”
Skeptical about his purpose, she glanced at the man and took in his composed
expression.
“Amelie, it’s been a while. How have you been faring abroad?”
“Thanks for asking. I’m doing well.”
Amelie kept her distance from the man, wanting nothing to do with him.
“Ms. Mullen, why must you be so standoffish? Come on and have some coffee. It’s a fine blend, one of the best.”
Amelie eyed the cup he offered with a frown, making no move to take it.
“What’s the matter? Don’t you care for coffee?”
Willard asked with a smile.
“Mr. Aylward, go ahead with what you have to say. There is no need to beat around the
bush.”
Amelie sneered.
“Good. I’ll cut to the chase too. If you agree to leave the entertainment industry, I’ll consider letting Prosperity Global off the (h o o k). Otherwise… well, you know what will
happen.”
Willard narrowed his eyes, and Amelie could see the threat lurking in his NôvelDrama.Org owns this.
“That’s absurd. Why should I do that?”
gaze.
She said icily, not impressed by his proposal.
“Leila has been unhappy because of you and Lamont ever since she returned. As her father, I must clear the way for her. If you agree to quit, I’ll let Lamont go.
Given
Prosperity Global’s current situation, I doubt it stands a chance against me. Think carefully about the consequences.”
Willard’s blatant threat took Amelie aback.
She had steeled herself to remain calm before coming here, but at the critical point, anger boiled up inside her.
“Threaten me as you like, I won’t back down. Do you really think you can defeat Lamont
but so easily? Don’t delude yourself. The Aylward family may be powerful now, compared to the Byron family, you’re nothing but ants. And while the Mullen family may be gone, our strength abroad is still formidable. Do you really think you stand a chance against us?”
Amelie spoke her mind without hesitation.
Her heart was in turmoil since this was no simple matter. If Willard was pushed too far, he might well show his true colors.
That could spell trouble for Lamont. But she couldn’t bring herself to back down so easily. If she
gave in to his demands, wouldn’t all her hard work have been for nothing?
The thought made her even more uneasy.
“Is that so? I must say, Amelie, I’m surprised at your confidence. The Mullen family has already fallen to me, and yet you remain so blind. If that’s how you want to play it, then don’t say I didn’t warn you. You’ve crossed my daughter, and there will be
consequences. Sooner or later, you’ll both pay the price.”
Willard spoke with an air of assurance.
“And another thing. You’d do well to keep a level head. Don’t be so naive. The Byron family may be strong, but the entertainment industry is fickle. Who can say what the
future holds for Prosperity Global? Wouldn’t you agree?”
With a smile, Willard drained his coffee and rose to his feet.
Amelie watched him go in silence, a sense of relief washing over her.
When she had first arrived here, she had been apprehensive about what Willard might want from her.
Now she understood that it was all for the sake of his daughter.
Leila’s life must not have been easy lately. She had tried several times to harm Amelie since her return, but each attempt had failed.
Perhaps she had grown desperate enough to enlist her father’s help.
The thought brought a smile to Amelie’s lips.
In the car, Lamont saw Willard coming out. A flicker of coldness passed over his
features.
He opened the door and got out of the car.
He made his way into the coffee shop and saw Amelie coming down the stairs.
“Did he give you any trouble?”
“No, didn’t you hear everything? He just wants me to leave the entertainment industry and even tried to use you as leverage. But I’m not about to give up so easily or let him lead me by the nose. He seems awfully sure of himself. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has some tricks up his sleeve. You should be careful.”
“Don’t worry about it. As I said, don’t take anything he says at face value. I’ve got people keeping an eye on him. If he makes a move, I’ll know about it. Trust me.”
Amelie was relieved to hear that.
