Chapter 1286
She threw her arms around Ronald, planting a kiss on his forehead in a moment of spontaneous affection. He was momentarily stunned but quickly responded with fervor. Applause thundered from the audience below.
On their wedding night, Ronald fulfilled a long-held dream, keeping Kari close by his side in a way he had always hoped for.
Ronald took Kari on a whirlwind three-month honeymoon.
They visited numerous countries before finally returning to Imperial City.
Those three months were the happiest Kari had ever been.
The night they returned, Ronald had a business meeting.
He dropped Kari off at home, planting a tender kiss on her forehead, "I'll be back late tonight, get some rest."
Exhausted, Kari could only nod, "Okay."
Worn out from the long journey, she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
A phone ringing in the middle of the night woke her.
It was Ronald.
"Honey, there's a file in the study's drawer I need. Can you find it for me? I'll have my assistant come pick it up."
"Don't bother him; I'll bring it over."
Kari, having slept for over ten hours, was full of energy.
Ronald sounded relieved.NôvelDrama.Org © 2024.
After freshening up, Kari headed to the study.
Following Ronald's instructions, she opened the drawer, finding numerous files including the one Ronald needed.
As she grabbed the file, another folder accidentally came out with it.
"Clatter-"
Holding the file Ronald needed, she bent down to pick up the dropped folder.
A photo fell out of the folder.
It was her.
Kari's pupils contracted.
The file detailed an accident caused by Nathan's father, dated right before her wedding.
...
Ronald waited for over an hour but Kari never showed.
He tried calling her, no answer.
His assistant sensed something was wrong, "Mr. Malone, perhaps we should postpone the meeting till tomorrow?"
Worried about Kari, Ronald agreed.
He found Kari sitting in the living room, pale as a ghost.
"Kari, what's wrong?"
Thinking she was still feeling the
effects of the journey, he quickly et
approached her, reaching out to feel her forehead, which was normal.
Kari looked up, her eyes wet, "You knew Nathan's father was the culprit all along, didn't you?"
Ronald's heart skipped a beat.
He withdrew his hand, attempting to explain, "I'm sorry-"
Kari's eyes began to tear up.
Ronald panicked, "Yes, I knew. Right before your wedding, I found out heard Mila saying she didn't like you, and Djust wanted to dig up some dirt on them..."
Ronald couldn't stand seeing Kari cry. He kneeled down, holding her hands as if afraid she'd run away, "I admit, I shouldn't have investigated."
"It wasn't me who leaked those details."
He didn't want Kari to marry Nathan.
But he was afraid.
Afraid Kari would be let down.
Afraid Kari would find out her fiancé was the son of her father's killer.
He never intended to expose the information.
Yet, Kari had found it.
Silent, Kari said nothing.
Ronald, in a panic, hugged her, murmuring apologies, even choking up at the end.
Until late in the night, Kari finally hugged him back, "I want him to go to jail."
She had given up on revenge.
Because she couldn't shake the foundations of the Jarvis family.
But that stack of documents reignited her past agony.
Why should the Jarvis family get away with a crime? Why did she and her mother suffer for decades without a fair explanation?
Ronald kissed her forehead gently, "Okay, I promise you."
"Whatever makes you happy, I'll do."
Kari felt a surge of emotion, tears rolling down her cheeks.
She cried quietly, as if all the years of pain from losing her father were being released in that moment.
No longer could she find an excuse to hide behind.
