Joe hesitated for a moment when he saw who was calling but then answered the phone.

“I’m in Fachington. What’s up?” he said.

“Okay.”

While Skylar was selecting pastries nearby, she noticed that Joe’s expression turned rather serious when he answered the phone. She assumed it was work–related, knowing Joe had a busy schedule in Fachington.

Skylar didn’t think much. She focused on picking out some pastries, including a couple of varieties she knew Natalie liked.

Once she finished picking them out, she walked over to Joe just as he finished his call.

She glanced at Joe’s phone screen unintentionally. It was a call from Vera. Her heart sank slightly. She told Joe, “I’ll handle the checkout.”

While Joe waited in line to pay, Skylar glanced at the pedestrians outside the bakery. Her phone buzzed with a new message.

She looked down at her phone and saw that it was from Vera. Just after finishing a call with Joe, Vera was already reaching out to her. She opened the message to check.

“Are you and Joe in Fachington? We spent two months there before and visited almost every place. Would you like me to send you a travel guide?”

It seemed Vera and Joe had shared many experiences.

Just as Skylar was lost in thought, Joe had already finished paying and walked over to her.

“Are you tired?” Joe asked.

Skylar looked up and saw the concern in his eyes. She nodded slightly and replied, “Yeah, a bit.”

“Then let’s head back to the hotel?”

“Okay.”

Once they returned to the hotel, Skylar took a shower. When she emerged, Joe was nowhere to be seen. He must have gone to handle work with Paul.

The ten–hour flight left her exhausted, so she went straight to bed to sleep.

Meanwhile, back in Jipsburg, Vera threw her phone onto the bed in frustration. “Skylar, you’re something, alright. Just wait until I expose your true self. I’ll make sure Joe knows you’ve deceived him.”

Joe was busy until late into the night before finally returning. Seeing that Skylar was asleep, he took a quick shower and quietly joined her in bed.

Skylar stirred at the sound and murmured groggily, “You’re back?”

Yeah, go back to sleep,” Joe replied.

He pulled Skylar closer into his arms, and she soon fell silent. Her breathing became steady.

The next morning, they adjusted to the time difference, sleeping for over ten hours. After breakfast, Skylar finally saw Natalie’s reply from the previous night.
