Chapter 814
Chapter 814
Skylar was a bit dazed by Steven’s question. “Hide something from you? No, not at all.”
“Is there some issue between you and Joe? Did he mistreat you?” Steven asked in a serious tone.
Earlier that day, Steven had come across news about the Ruell family.
Then, there was a report that specifically described the well–matched romance between Vera and Joe. It included all the latest photos that had been taken.
The reports mentioned that the hospital where the Ruell family was staying was part of the Martin Group. None of the reports mentioned Joe’s married status.
Instead, they speculated that Joe and Vera would likely get engaged soon, emphasizing that true feelings were revealed in times of hardship. They suggested that their relationship must be growing stronger.
Skylar was even more confused by his question. While there were indeed some issues between her and Joe, she had always preferred to share only good news with her family, keeping any troubles to herself to avoid causing them to worry.
So Skylar wondered why Steven was suddenly calling her to question her. She even questioned whether – there was something she didn’t know about or hadn’t yet discovered.
“Joe and I are getting along well now. He hasn’t mistreated me, and it’s impossible for him to do so. Why are you asking this all of a sudden?” She leaned against the bed, trying to shake off some of her lingering sleepiness.
Steven had made the call from his room. He didn’t want Janine to hear and worry.
Steven had watched Skylar grow up and knew her well.
“You’ve been quiet in the group chat these past few days. You’ve only occasionally asked about Mom’s condition, which isn’t like you. Something must be on your mind.
“Skye, I’m calling to let you know that no matter what happens, you always have me to support you. I’m your brother, you know?”
Skylar’s nose tingled, and her voice choked up. “I’ve just been swamped with work lately, and it’s been tiring. Also, Joe has been abroad for the past few days. If you’ve seen any of those bizarre reports, don’t believe them.”
It was likely the recent troubles at the Ruell family had led to a flurry of gossip and news. It wasn’t surprising if Joe was somehow involved.
Steven noticed that Skylar’s tone seemed genuine and felt a bit reassured. “Alright, take care of yourself. Don’t worry about Mom. I’ve arranged for someone to take care of her.
“You focus on your work. I’m not very busy lately, so I’ll stay at home after work.”
“Thanks! Steven, you’re the best.”
“Of course!”
After ending the call, Skylar completely lost her desire to sleep.
It was Saturday.
She had stayed up late reading last night. She woke up more than an hour later than usual. If it hadn’t been for Steven’s call, she might have slept until 10:00 am.
After washing her face, she went downstairs to make a simple breakfast.
While eating, she searched for news about the Ruell family.
The news was similar to what Caleb had shown her yesterday. The fire at the Ruell Residence left the three members of the Ruell family hospitalized. Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
However, it seemed that people nowadays were quite fond of gossip. Many reports weren’t focused on the recent troubles at the Ruell family but speculated on Joe and Vera’s relationship.
They were curious about when they might get engaged and the business dealings between their families. Even the specific college where Vera attended abroad was detailed.
This atmosphere painted a picture of their relationship growing even deeper during the Ruell family’s time of crisis. She felt a heavy weight in her chest.
Just then, someone opened the door and walked in directly.
She immediately stood up. Joe appeared before her.
He looked at Skylar and said, “It’s me.”
Skylar was slightly startled. Joe’s face showed signs of exhaustion, and upon closer inspection, she could see the bloodshot veins in his eyes.
““Did you just get off the plane?”
“Yeah.”
Joe walked over with long strides. Dressed in comfortable casual clothes, he removed his coat and set it aside.
His simple white T–shirt made him look less aloof and more like a typical college student.
“Do you have any plans for today?” he asked.
