Chapter 8
41
“This isn’t happening.” Archer says.
He’s still protesting and has been since we left the Cave. Mia is still asleep in my arms. She looks so soft, bundled up like this. Myself, Wyatt and the Hayes brothers are all walking back to their pyramid. They insisted we take her back there after Mia’d been out of her crib for so long. The walk is short but I’ve barely been able to say anything. In fact, I think I’ve said three words since she was put into my arms. They’ve been bickering back and forth the whole time.
“Give it a rest, Arch,” Beau snaps. “You’ve given us no solid reason as to why she shouldn’t take care of the kid.”
“You all saw how she drew the knife on me!” Archer says. “She’s insane just like her batshit step–dad.”
“Hey!” Wyatt chirps. “That’s my dad your talking about.” Archer whirls around and jabs his index finger into Wyatt’s
chest..
“Your dad suggested this psychopath be allowed in Moonriver,” Archer sneers. “Among all the people of high society who actually deserve to be here.”
“I deserve to be here!” Wyatt protests. He throws a hand towards me. “It’s not my fault she’s insane!”
“We keep saying she’s insane,” Beau drawls. “Yet we know nothing about this chick. Is it possible we just got off on the wrong foot?”
“For Gods sake, Beau,” Archer says. “She tried to kill me. What about that is getting off on the wrong foot??”
I’m about to pipe up and remind them I’m right. Fucking. There. The quietest of the brother’s, Steve, I think, cuts me
off.
“She’s not a noble lady,” he says. We don’t know what health care they have where she’s from. She could have some sort of disease and pass it onto the baby.” He shakes his head. “It would be risky to even attempt to give her the kid.”
“She also hates us,” Beau adds with a quirk of his head. “Which means she may have another motive besides taking care of the kid. We did make her Untouchable.”
We reach the pyramid. The brothers, and Wyatt, are quiet a moment. They linger outside. Finally, Neil, the long- haired one, speaks.
“We have to look at what we know,” he says. “Mia stopped crying as soon as she was in her arms. None of the girls we interviewed could do that. Sure, she hates us. But she can’t hate the baby. It’s a baby. Plus, if her story is true, the kid crawling into her arms. Something drew Mia to her. She didn’t have that reaction with anyone else.”
The other brothers and Wyatt are silent. None of them can come up with any sort of rebuttal. Neil chews his bottom lip. Finally he nods once.
“She’ll take care of the baby,” he says. “Under our watch,”
“Under our watch?” Archer repeats. “You mean in the Pyramid?” He almost growls as he looks me over. “Fuck no.”
“What other option do we have?” Neil says. “None of us have time to take care of a miserable kid.”
“Yeah, but live in our house?” Beau looks nervous. He shakes his head sharply. “I don’t like it.”
“It’ll be the best way for us to all watch over her and make sure there’s no funny business,” Neil says. “Bullshit,” Archer snaps. “She’ll probably try to kill us in our sleep.”
12:45PM
“Lock her in her room?” Beau says.
“How’s she going to take care of the baby then?” Neil says.
“We can take shifts,” Archer says. “Like we do with watch.”
Neil shakes his head. “We tried that. She wouldn’t stop crying”
“I can watch her,” Wyatt tries.
“You’re campus Beta,” Archer snorts. “You have much more important things to be doing.”
“I can do both?”
“No you cannot,” Beau snaps. “You barely can do your own duties. Need I mention the incident at homecoming?”
“Our only option is this girl,” Neil says.
“I refuse, Archer.
“You don’t get to,” Neil.
“—and then the incident at prom last year?” Beau is still rattling off Wyatt’s offenses.
“Gods, Beau. Do you have a running list of all my wrong–doings?”
“I’m still refusing, Neil.”
“I don’t give a damn. She’s doing it.”
“Her diseases?” Steve says, flabbergasted. “Is no one thinking of her diseases?”
They all look at me. My head is spinning with the constant bickering. In my arms, Mia stirs slightly. I immediately look down at her. Sure enough, she’s still asleep. Her hand is flexing against my index finger, squeezing and pulling. I look back up at the men in front of me.
“I–I don’t know,” I say quietly. “I don’t know a single thing about this kid. She just crawled in with me, I swear. I can’t be expected to be her caretaker because she came to me. I don’t even know if the bullshit story you told everyone is
even true!”
Beau looks at Archer, who’s lip twitches. Steven slinks back in on himself. Wyatt’s eyes wander. Neil keeps a straight face. He clears his throat.
“The story behind how she came to us is unimportant,” he says. “What is important is that someone takes care of her.”
“But who are you to ask this of me?” I snap. I’m beginning to feel angry again. The flames of disgust and my rage towards these rich, douchebags.
“We’re just three men who don’t know how to raise a kid,” Neil says. “We need you’re help just as much as Mia needs
you.”
I scoff. “Sure you do,” I say. “You’re all a bunch of arrogant, pompous pricks. You couldn’t raise a kid if you tried.”
“Charming. Beau deadpans. He nudges Neil. “You sure about this?”
“Very sure,” Neil says. “Chloe, please.”
It’s the first time someone has used my actual name on campus and not sounded disgusted to be doing so. I look up at Neil and then back down at the baby.

A baby. It’s a lot of responsibility. I’m only nineteen and I’m supposed to raise another wolf to be her own person? In unfathomable. Besides the fact that not one of these brothers have given me anything but the absolute worst since I showed up here.
Mia is still asleep. She’s so small, so helpless. I think of my mom. I think of what’d she do if given a baby in my position. Camila Kissimet would never let a child go unattended. It was one of the best features about her. She was a saint amongst sinners. Especially in Greendale. With a heaving sigh, I looked up and met Neil’s

eyes.
Beau immediately groans and Archer breaks into a horrific growl. Steven looks like he’s about to have a nervous break down. Wyatt stands behind them all, shaking his head as if this is something disgraceful. I try to keep my face as neutral as possible. I lock eyes with Neil again and arch my eyebrow. He nods once then licks the front of his teeth.
“I will free the Untouchables.”
