Chapter 35 Consider My Lexie
At Howard Group headquarters, the office was lit with incense, mixed with the smell of tea, which made people meditate and concentrate. This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.
Alan was not old, but had the old-school style, and usually he was unsmiling, which was one of the reasons why he took over the Howard Group at such a young age and was sincerely convinced.
“Mr. Alan, we’re almost done talking about the Tomly project, here’s the latest progress.”
“Okay,” Alan took the file, leaned back on the sofa and flipped through two pages, asking casually, “Has there been any recent news over at the hospital?”
Jack answered, “The operation went quite well, Mrs. Howard has been personally taking care of her grandma. The old lady is recovering well and will be discharged in another week, and I see that Mrs. Howard has been looking for a house recently.”
“She’s looking for a house?”
“It should be a house where the old lady lives after she is discharged,” Jack explained, “Earlier the old lady had been living with Mrs. Howard in the Mitchell’s, but not Mrs. Mitchell is married now. The old lady has nothing to do with the Mitchell family, so she shouldn’t want to live there anymore.”
In fact, Jack’s statement was considered a euphemism, just based on Lexie’s position in the Mitchell family, her grandma’s life in the Mitchell family would not be easy.
Alan pondered for a moment, “You have someone arrange the house privately.”
Jack froze for a moment, snapping back, “Yes.”
Wasn’t Mr. Alan not at all concerned about his wife? Why did he change his attitude …
Lexie stayed in the hospital for a few days and watched her grandma’s spirit getting netter, she relaxed a lot.
Kevin came over to check in the morning. To avoid post-operative infection, the hospital had changed the single ward for grandma, which was much quieter than the previous environment.
“Grandma is recovering well, and at this rate, she should be discharged sooner than expected,” Kevin smiled, receiving the stethoscope into his coat pocket.
“Thank you, Dr. Stewart,” Grandma’s head was wrapped in gauze, but she didn’t look like a patient at all, she was very spirited and took Kevin’s hand and examined him. The more she looked at him, the more she liked him.
“I have a question.”
Kevin smiled, “What is it?”
“What do you think of Lexie, Dr. Stewart?”
Grandma’s words caused Lexie, who was standing by, to freeze, and the knife she was holding to peel the apple almost cut her hand.
Kevin, however, didn’t hear the slightest thing wrong, and gave Lexie a look, “Lexie is very nice, pretty and gentle, and most importantly, kind.”
“You don’t mind that she can’t talk?”
Kevin froze for a moment, and that was when he heard some of the implications.
Without waiting for him to answer, Lexie had already sharply pulled at her grandma, gesturing with one hand, [Grandma, what are you talking about? Stop it.]
“She is embarrassing,” Grandma said with a smile, “Dr. Stewart, Lexie is about the same age as you, although not as highly educated as you, she has a master degree, and her job is stable, working in the J City Library as an archivist… …”
Grandma had long speech, mentioning everything and Lexie could not stop her.
“Dr. Stewart, Lexie is a good girl, think about it.”
Kevin looked complicated, and when he looked at Lexie, he found her shaking her head carefully, as if she was asking for help.
It looked like Grandma didn’t know about Lexie’s relationship with him, or even that Lexie had been married!
After chatting for a while, Grandma urged Lexie to send Kevin off, which was clearly to create a chance for the two of them to be alone.
[I’m sorry, don’t take what grandma said just now to heart.]
As soon as they left the door of the ward, Lexie was apologizing to Kevin.
Kevin wondered, “Doesn’t grandma know about your marriage yet? Why didn’t you tell her?”
The Howard family was a powerful family in J City, and marrying into the Howard family, no matter how Alan was, should be considered a pretty good marriage for the Mitchell family.
Lexie, however, had a bitter face and looked awkward, [Please help me keep it a secret, don’t let grandma know for now, I’ll talk to grandma sometime later.]
Perhaps it would never need to be said, if she could successfully take her grandma out of J City.
Looking at her, Kevin frowned, “Do you have some kind of hardship marrying my cousin?”
Lexie froze for a moment.
“My cousin’s personality has been a bit withdrawn, so I was still surprised when I heard that he got married, thinking it would be a business union or something. I heard that the Mitchell Pharmaceutical Group had some problems earlier, did you do it for the Mitchell family …”
Looking at Kevin’s concerned look, Lexie was suddenly very touched and also suddenly very aggravated.
It was the first time someone had asked her that since she had married Alan, even though Kevin’s guess wasn’t entirely correct.
Everyone thought that her being able to marry into the Howard family was a blessing, and that a mute should be grateful to be married to Alan.
Lexie shook her head and denied it.
Just in time, the phone suddenly rang, interrupting the conversation between the two men.
Lexie saw an unknown number, and when she got through, a male voice came from there, “It’s Miss Mitchell, isn’t it? I am from real estate agency, are you looking for a house? I happen to have a house here, and I can show you this afternoon.”
Lexie had no way to speak and when she was about to hang up and text a response, Kevin held out his hand, “Let me take it.”
The two were close enough so Kevin could hear what was said on the phone.
He knew that recently Lexie was looking for a house.
Lexie gratefully handed the phone over.
“Hello, she’s not available to answer the phone, just tell me about the house.”
“…”
“This afternoon?” Kevin lifted his wrist and looked at it, “Around 12:30 p. m. I think, I happen to be off work on my lunch break, so I can go over there.”
“…”
“Okay, then.”
Hanging up the phone, Kevin handed the phone back to Lexie, “I’ll accompany you over to see the house at twelve noon.”
Lexie shook her head, [Don’t bother, I’ll just go by myself.]
“Forget it, you’re easy to be fooled,” Kevin smiled gently, “It just so happens that I have nothing to do at lunchtime, so I’ll go with you.”
[Thank you.]
Lexie couldn’t refuse, and she did get a little scared alone.
Soon it was noon and Kevin drove her to the place she had agreed with the real estate agent.
The man from real estate agent wore a suit and was enthusiastic about introducing the house, “We have a large flat, one hundred and fifty square meters, with an elevator, which is very convenient for the elderly, most suitable for your situation.”
Lexie followed the agent and looked around at the house in front of her, and really couldn’t pick a single thing wrong with it.
The house was on the fifteenth floor with bright kitchen and bright bathroom, they could just move in. The most important thing was that the location was excellent, only ten minutes walk from the library where Lexie worked. If something happened to grandma, she could completely rush back at the first time.
But …
“What’s wrong? Don’t like it?” Kevin’s voice came from behind her, “I think it’s not a bad place.”
Lexie hesitantly asked, [How much is the rent for this place?]
The agent looked at her words and immediately smiled, “Miss Mitchell, don’t worry, this house is very cheap, the monthly rent is three thousand.”
Three thousand?
Lexie froze.
Even if she had never rented a house, she knew that three thousand couldn’t even afford to rent a toilet in such a location and decoration.
How was that possible?
