Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 444

The sun was already high in the sky when Selena finally woke up. The guy had really worn her out, leaving her feeling so spent that she couldn't get up right away. She lay there, trying to gather herself.

Beside her, the bed was empty, so she slowly turned her eyes, stiff from sleep, to check out the room. Over on the sofa, a man lounged back in a bathrobe, his gaze fixed thoughtfully on a light gray sweater that was sitting on the coffee table. His chin rested on his hand, deep in thought.

Selena snapped to full alertness, her dark eyes narrowing as every bit of tiredness vanished. His arrival the day before had been unexpected, and things had gotten tense quickly. She hadn't had a moment to clean up, and now it seemed he had seen the evidence. That guy, Everett, was sharp as a tack. If he started suspecting something...

Feeling her gaze, Everett turned his head and met her eyes, which were filled with uncertainty.

"Awake?"

His voice was cool, giving nothing away. "Go wash up, then come have breakfast."

Selena, feeling a bit guilty, avoided his eyes, taking a deep breath. She wrapped herself in the bathrobe waiting beside the bed and headed to the bathroom.

She splashed her face with cold water to shake off the sleep and calm her racing thoughts, then slowly made her way out.

Lunch had already been delivered, filling the table with a spread of Chinese dishes, each one more tempting than the last. They were all Selena's favorites.

Selena paused, taking it all in.

"You've been away for a while, and knowing how much you love your food, I figured you might be missing some home flavors. So, I had Alex find a Chinese chef to whip up these dishes for you. Give them a try." Everett rarely explained himself like this. His words had a hint of indulgence.

He pulled out a chair for her in a gentlemanly manner as he spoke.

Selena's lips twitched into a small smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. His belated thoughtfulness didn't quite hit the mark. The Selena of today needed more than just this!

Everett couldn't spot even a hint of emotion or joy on her face, which bugged him a bit. He thought back to how bright her smile had been when she thought she'd be seeing Callum yesterday, and then how she'd reacted to him, as if seeing a ghost!

The more he thought about it, the more it got under his skin. But instead of losing his temper, he just frowned slightly and eased her into a chair before sitting across from her.

"Eat up. Even if you're not hungry, the baby needs to eat. You can't starve the little one, right?"

Selena wasn't really in the mood for eating, but she'd rather dig into her meal than lock eyes with him in some awkward stare-off. Plus, eating gave her something to focus on instead of her nerves.

Maybe the food wasn't to Everett's liking, or maybe it was something else, but he only picked at his food before pouring himself a glass of red wine and sipping it slowly. Even though she wasn't looking directly at him, Selena could feel his eyes on her, like he was trying to figure something out.

After she finished eating, he finally spoke, "Selena, we need to talk."NôvelDrama.Org: owner of this content.

Selena paused, her napkin hovering by her lips, then casually raised her head.

"Unless it's about the divorce, there's nothing to talk about."

She tossed the napkin aside and stood up to leave.

But Everett wasn't about to let her escape. His dark eyes fixed on her, he asked directly, "Why are you knitting a sweater for a kid? And a boy's sweater at that." Selena swallowed hard, then replied lightly, "Just something to do, to kill time."

He didn't seem surprised by her answer.
