Chapter 107

“I think I got him,” Lars said in my ear.NôvelDrama.Org owns © this.

A split second later, I heard the voice of the woman I loved screaming from the bell tower:

“FUCK YEAH! FUCK YOU, MOTHERFUCKER!”

“You got him,” I said, my heart soaring.

Then I turned to the men behind me and shouted, “LET’S GO!”

I charged into the courtyard, bellowing at the top of my lungs, my shield held out in front of me as I fired my gun.

All of my men charged into the courtyard behind me, guns blazing.

Adriano leaped up from his hiding place, firing and screaming like a madman.

Two, three, four mercenaries went down –

But two of our men went down, too.

I felt a burst of pain on my right side.

I turned and fired at a mercenary in the shadows and took him down with one shot.

One of the Russians screamed something that was probably Fall back! –

And the mercenaries began retreating across the courtyard into the church.

Dozens of bullets blasted my shield, and the glass pane turned opaque from all the cracks in it.

Ping ping ping ping ping ping

Something struck my leg with a horrific pain, but I ignored it and kept going.

And then we were in the church.

The mercenaries crouched behind pews – hid behind corners –

But one by one, we took them down.

Unfortunately, they took three more of my men with them.

Not all of them were dead, but they were so badly wounded they couldn’t keep going.

In the end, it was only me and Adriano as we burst out of the back of the church.

The bell tower was 20 feet away across a tree-lined courtyard.

Gunshots echoed behind us in the church, and I felt a sharp pain flare in my back.

“GO!” Adriano screamed as he crouched next to the door and returned fire. “I’ll hold them off!”

I staggered towards the bell tower.

A man in a suit – one of Aurelio’s thugs – was inside the doorway.

He opened fire –

But I slammed the car door into him like a battering ram.

When he fell to the ground, I dropped into a crouch and slammed the bottom of my shield into his head with a crunch, turning his skull to pulp.

Then I started up the stairs.

Man after man was on the stairwell, firing down at me.

The vast majority of shots I blocked with the shield, but ricochets and pieces of shrapnel buzzed around me like angry bees.

Every man that appeared, I shot him –

Or I bludgeoned him to death –

Until there were a dozen dead bodies in my wake.

I dropped the magazine from my gun and reloaded.

Then I staggered up the last few stairs to the top of the bell tower.
