Chapter 16
At the Miller residence, Athena went up to Andrew and proceeded to unbutton his shirt, but he grabbed her wrist to stop her.
“Let go!” Athena put on a serious face. She could not contain her anger anymore.
Standing by the side, Grace, too, noticed the injury on his left chest. She looked pained. “Andrew, do you still wish to defend her?”
“Get a divorce right now! Us Millers don’t want a family member like her!” Athena growled before Andrew could respond to Grace.
At that point, the Millers had reached the end of their patience with Madelyn. Grace stared at her son in tears. Her look was one of begging as she quietly nodded at him.
He frowned. “She has nothing to do with this.”
“How dare you speak up for her?” Athena trembled in rage as she slammed her walking cane on the floor.
The women in the family could not allow Madelyn to hurt Andrew–the most accomplished younger member of their family who commanded everyone’s respect.
“Great–Grandma, you can’t put the blame on Madelyn. It’s not like she willingly married Uncle Andrew, right?” Easton went up to Athena and glanced at Andrew before speaking.
“Shut up, you rascal.” She tapped her walking cane on Easton’s shoulder. She might be old, but she was aware of the relationship between Easton and Madelyn. She would beat up her dishonorable great–grandson if she could.
Madelyn showed up right as Athena tapped Easton on the shoulder with her stick. Those who were present at the scene inhaled sharply when she arrived.
When Easton spotted her, he bore the pain and warned her, “Maddie, leave now.”
All eyes turned to the entrance when he addressed Madelyn by her nickname.
Andrew’s demeanor shifted when he laid his eyes on Madelyn, especially when she was exchanging looks with Easton. The tenderness in his eyes was replaced by coldness.
Madelyn looked away from Easton and jogged toward Andrew when she sensed his icy glare. At the same time, Andrew approached her while pressing against his
shoulder injury.
Chapter 10
He promised, “Don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of everything by tonight. You should go home first…”
Easton was dumbstruck when she passed him by and went straight for Andrew. She
asked Andrew with concern, “Darling, I was late. Are you okay?”
Easton stiffened. Was this for real? Did Madelyn just snub him in front of everyone? But why?
He
e was reminded of her change in attitude over the phone call that night, and his face flushed in anger.
Madelyn was too focused on Andrew to notice Easton’s mood. “Does it hurt? Should we get Dr. Patel to come?”
Andrew questioned sternly, “Where’s Jason?”
She buttoned up his shirt while replying, “I made him go home because I wanted to meet up with you.”
“Go home for now!” Andrew took her wrist to drag her out of the Miller residence, but Athena stopped him. “Since you’re here, you should sign the divorce papers. Ryan…”
“Got it, Mrs. Miller Senior. I’ll get the papers from the study.”
Madelyn was surprised that the Millers, like Andrew, had the divorce papers ready
Andrew wore a scowl as he met his grandmother’s eyes.
Before he could speak, Madelyn stepped up. She softly greeted Athena and Grace respectively, “Hi, Grandma, Mom.”
The two ladies exchanged a doubtful look. It had been a while since they last heard Madelyn speaking in that gentle tone.
Grace remained silent. Athena looked at Madelyn with a sour look on her face. Shet replied, “Don’t call me ‘Grandma‘.”
“Grandma, don’t be mad.” Madelyn walked over to Athena with the velvet box in her arms, which Athena immediately recognized as her gift to Elena earlier today as compensation.
Why did it end up in Madelyn’s possession?
Amid Athena’s confusion, Madelyn handed over the box. “Your birthday is around the corner. You should be receiving gifts instead of getting talked into giving away such an expensive item.”
“What do you mean? Are you saying I was fooled?”
Madelyn’s remark had done nothing but fuel Athena’s anger. Smiling, Madelyn nodded cheekily. “Yeah, Grandma. You’ve been fooled. How could you be talked into giving away seven million worth of jewelry?”
Everyone looked at Madelyn in disbelief. How could she openly call Athena a fool? Still, they found it hard to be upset at her because of her sweet mannerisms.
Grace studied Madelyn. For a moment, she had been transported back to the time. when Madelyn was a mere child. Madelyn was so adorable yet pitiful back then.
Athena’s face turned red. “Y–You… I don’t care what you say. You need to sign the divorce papers today.”
Grace instinctively wanted to persuade Athena, but Madelyn grabbed Athena by the arm and chirped, “Are you forcing me to divorce my darling? No! I object.”
Athena glowered at her. “He’ll end up dead one day if he doesn’t divorce you now.”
“Did I ever say that it was Madelyn who hurt me?” Andrew took the chance to approach them.
Madelyn looked into his deep eyes, feeling touched that he was standing up for her.
She owned up to her mistakes, but she would not allow herself to take the
blame for Andrew’s injury.
Therefore, she decided to put the blame on Elena–an eye for an eye.
Athena glared at Andrew. “But Elena told me everything. Are you still going to defend Madelyn?”
“Oh, was Elena the one who spread this rumor to ruin relationships?” Andrew hissed.
Madelyn immediately chimed in, “Grandma, what did Elena say to you?”Original from NôvelDrama.Org.
“What do you guys mean?” At this time, Grace went up and asked Andrew for
clarification.
He frowned at Madelyn, who got his hint and held Athena tighter. Then, she shot a troubled expression at Grace.
Grace, having raised Madelyn for ten years, might struggle to forgive Madelyn for hurting Andrew, but under other circumstances, she would always protect Madelyn.
“Maddie, speak.” Athena shifted her focus to Madelyn.
Madelyn lowered her gaze. An aggrieved expression crossed her face. “It’s hard to explain.”
With a grin, Andrew silently marveled at Madelyn’s award–worthy acting. Easton tried
to approach Madelyn but fearfully froze under Andrew’s warning look.
Madelyn caught their interaction from the corner of her eye.
Athena grew impatient. “Just tell us.” She was curious about how Andrew’s injury came by.
Madelyn looked reluctant to confess. “Well, I found out that Elena has been lying to me. When I pressed on, she became furious and fought me.”
“Would Elena ever hit you?” Athena questioned Madelyn’s account as Elena was always poised, mild–tempered, and well–mannered. Although Elena was the daughter of a mistress, she tried her best to carry herself with grace.
“I was shocked too, Grandma. During the fight, she grabbed a fruit knife and tried to stab me. Andrew came home at that time and took the knife for me.” In other words, she insinuated that Elena had stabbed Andrew in the chest.
Her tears flowed, making her look pitiful and fearful..
Still doubtful, Athena questioned her, “What did she lie to you about?”
“She cozied up to me because she had eyes for my handsome husband. She was planning to take him from my side.”
