Chapter 41
Chapter 41
“No, Grandpa Declan. It’s not Don’s fault. I was careless and bumped into something.” Gisele said, her voice tinged with guilt.
She had never intended to accept Johnson’s proposal, but her spiteful words at Dorian and saying anything disrespectful in front of Declan were unnecessary.
Declan ordered Alfred, “Go get an ice pack for her.”
“Sure, I’ll grab it now,” Alfred replied as he headed to the kitchen.
She sat awkwardly beside Declan and smiled faintly. “Grandpa Declan, is there something on your mind? You could have simply asked Alfred to inform me. Why did you feel the need to come yourself?”
“It’s about you being a murder suspect.” Declan tightened his grip on his cane as he broached the sensitive topic.
He reassured her, saying, “But don’t worry. I believe you’re innocent. While the situation. has caused quite a commotion, the Dougs have expedited the process. We may expect results in the coming days.
“Also, I dropped by mainly to ask if you have any specific suspects in mind?”
Alfred returned with the ice pack, which Gisele accepted. She gently pressed it against her
swollen ch*ek.
She smiled and shook her head. “No, I’ve maintained a low profile all these years. I doubt I’ve offended anyone.”
She knew that bringing up unfounded suspicions would only stress him out.
Declan said, “It’s likely tied to the Doug family, but don’t sweat it. The police will straighten
it out.”
He changed the subject and said, “But you and Don should consider having a child. A little one can smooth things over between you two.”
Gisele felt embarrassed and instinctively placed her hand on her flat belly.
It used to be the home for her and Dorian’s bay–one they had struggled so hard to conceive after multiple attempts and harvesting dozens of eggs.
Unfortunately, she’d had a miscarriage.
“Grandpa Declan, I understand. I’ll talk to Don as soon as I can.” She smiled and nodded.
Declan nodded and gently patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry. You’re the only daughter–in- law I acknowledge. The rest aren’t even in the running.” Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.
She smiled but remained silent. As she saw that he was about to leave, she remembered the herbal tea she had prepared earlier and hurried to fetch it. He handed it over to Alfred.
She said, “Grandpa Declan’s lungs aren’t in the best shape. Remember to brew this herbal tea for him. It’s good for soothing coughs and relieving respiratory discomfort.
“Once he’s finished, come back to me for more. I’ve got plenty!”
“You’re so thoughtful,” Declan said affectionately.
He looked at her and felt a sense of injustice. Dorian had overlooked a fine girl like her in favor of Sierra, and Declan felt indignant on Gisele’s behalf.
She watched as Declan’s car pulled away, then sighed.
She knew why he had dropped by unannounced.
He must have heard that she and Dorian were coming home together, so he had swung by to check if everything was amicable between them.
Yet, she was relieved that he had shown up late. Otherwise, he would’ve been furious.
Gisele sighed and went upstairs to take a shower.
She had planned to feast at the night market after being hungry the whole day, but she had lost her appetite after the incident.
After showering, she drifted off to sleep with her slightly swollen ch*ek pressed against the pillow.
At noon the next day, Gisele woke up to find the news app buzzing with another story about Dorian and Sierra’s cozy outing.
In the snapshot, Dorian was seen walking out of the hospital with his arm linked with Sierra’s.
It sparked speculation among netizens that her hospital stint might be linked to a bun in the oven, which explained her prolonged stay at the hospital.
Gisele chuckled wryly. She knew Dorian would never mistreat Sierra.
As she prepared to put down her phone, she received an unexpected text message
Upon reading it, she felt a shiver run down her spine, and her complexion drained of color. She couldn’t fathom why Dorian would stoop to such extremes.
