Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Gwendolyn dropped her gaze to the bold and black lettering adorning the top of the document Marriage Contract. The contract specified that once his legs were fully healed, they would divorce, limiting the duration to a maximum of three months. In gratitude, he would gift her a house and a check for a million dollars.
“If you have no objections, sign here. I don’t like being in debt, and this serves as a nondisclosure agreement too,” he said, drafting the contract after reviewing the investigation report from the previous day.
Gwendolyn met his gaze briefly before signing her name with an elegant yet assertive flourish.
“Mr. Chadwick, pleasure doing business with you.” then she said. Her eyes, clear and stunning, sparkled with vivacity when she smiled.
Howard paused and responded with a faint smile. For the first time, his unshaken heart felt the gentle brush of a feather.
“Gwendolyn, this is your choice to make.” replied Howard.
He had drawn up this contract not to bind her to him, but to give her the freedom to choose, to stay or to leave when the time came.
Upon returning home, Marina rushed to greet them. “Nathan stopped by to visit you.”
“Alright.”
Guiding his wheelchair up the ramp, Gwendolyn entered the foyer and immediately spotted an attractive and dashing figure lounging on the sofa, messy bangs falling across his forehead and deep–
set, ocean–blue eyes.
“Howard.” Nathan stood up, eyeing Gwendolyn and said, “This must be your new wife.”
He had come to see what kind of extraordinary woman had convinced Howard to mobilize his private resources and masquerade as an extra in a crowd scene.
“This is Nathan, an unimportant person. You don’t have to be polite to him.” Howard introduced, observing formalities.
“Hey, what do you mean? I’ve been your right–hand man for years!” Without Nathan’s cover, Howard’s secret identity would have been exposed long ago.
Gwendolyn curled her lips into a smile, charming and amused.
Nathan felt a bit sheepish under her gaze.
“Howard, I’ve got some business with you.”
With thoughtful consideration, Gwendolyn interjected, “You two chat. I’ll go to our room and get ready.” She was referring to the preparation for his acupuncture treatment.
Howard nodded in agreement.
As she left, Nathan teased, “What kind of preparation, huh? Bedroom preparations?”
“Get lost!”
Nathan chuckled mischievously before adding, “Is she really a disciple of Mr. White? You’d never guess. Lady Luck seems to be on your side. Doesn’t she remind you a bit of…?” Content property of NôvelDra/ma.Org.
“Leave if there’s nothing else.”
“Don’t be like that. I’m here to discuss the quarterly reports of the Summit Corp.”
At the Sawyer family.
Vivien, seething with frustration, smashed her cosmetics to the floor in a fit of rage.
“Bitch! Why her!” Internally, Vivien was green with envy, but she consoled herself repeatedly. Howard was a cripple now, and Bainbridge was the better catch.
Her phone on the vanity vibrated furiously. Vivien took a deep breath before answering the call, her voice laced with feigned tears, “Bainbridge, Howard has gone too far! He’s with…”
“Did you fail to get the document?” Bainbridge had little patience, “If you can’t deliver what I want, there’s no way I’m marrying you.”
Vivien stiffened her face, saying, “Bainbridge, I arranged for Gwendolyn to take my place at the altar for your sake.”
“If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait!” A sinister glint flashed in Vivien, “I have another plan! This time, Howard will be begging you on his knees, ready to hand over the Transfer of Project with respect.”
She quickly relayed her idea, and Bainbridge on the other end was thoroughly pleased.
“Vivien, you’re far more ruthless than I thought!”
This move was designed to solve the problem once and for all.
